The ladies at QWERTY Type don't disappoint...
Such a fantastic life skill to learn and the ladies at QWERTY Type don’t disappoint, so helpful and also made both of my children feel like an individual. (One did the course as part of DofE and was so good we booked for our older child so she too had this fantastic life skill)… both are now using their new skills for homework and for note taking in class! Thank you ladies.

Touch typing is a practical, lifelong skill that supports schoolwork, exams and future careers. It fits well with the DofE skill section because progress is measurable, structured, and easy to evidence over time.
They’ll develop speed, accuracy and confidence using a keyboard. Many students also find their written work improves because they can focus on ideas rather than the mechanics of typing.
Yes — touch typing can be learned by beginners and those with some experience. It’s particularly beneficial for children who struggle with handwriting or organisation, as it provides an alternative way to work efficiently.
The skill can be practised regularly over the required weeks (Bronze or Silver) with clear goals and progress tracking. Time spent learning and practising can be logged, and improvement can be demonstrated.
Progress is typically tracked through typing speed (words per minute) and accuracy. This makes it easy to show consistent development throughout the DofE period. Our courses are either completed online each week or flexibly offline with work submitted weekly.
Most students enjoy seeing their improvement week by week. Setting small, achievable targets helps maintain motivation, and the skill quickly feels useful in everyday school life.
Not at all — while it supports academic work, it’s a practical life skill. DofE encourages building independence and real-world ability, which typing clearly supports.
Absolutely. It’s a skill they’ll use throughout school, university and most careers. It can also reduce stress around homework and exams.
No — once set up, students can practise independently. They can complete the course online each week in a small group (Monday or Tuesday 5.30 – 6.30pm for 13 weeks). Or they can do the course offline, completing tasks set by Clare or Philippa each week for 13 weeks.
Compared to some skills, touch typing offers immediate and lasting benefits. It’s one of those rare options where the effort invested pays off straight away and continues to do so for years.
