How Touch Typing Helps Children with SEND

Supporting children with SEND to overcome writing barriers and build confidence through touch typing.

Touch typing can be transformative for children with SEND, helping remove the barriers that traditional writing often creates. For many learners with dyslexia, ADHD, dyspraxia, autism and other additional needs, handwriting can be slow, frustrating, and mentally exhausting. By learning to type efficiently, children can focus on their ideas instead of the physical process of writing—building confidence, independence, and a more positive experience with learning both in and out of the classroom.

Our Touch Typing Courses are suitable for students with learning differences. Our courses are run by qualified teachers, with many years experience of teaching pupils with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD, Processing, ASD & Down Syndrome.

Such a fantastic life skill to learn and the ladies at QWERTY kids don't dissappoint, so helpful and also made both of my children feel like an individual. (One did the course are part of DOFE and was so good we booked for our older child so she too had this fantastic life skill)... both are now using their new skills for homework and for note taking in class! thank you ladies.

I can't recommend this course highly enough. Our 13 year old has always massively struggled with his written presentation and this course has provided a gateway into attainment that was previously blocked. The course leaders were quite simply phenomenal and I am a harsh critic!

My 14 year old son has just completed the 12 week online touch type course as part of the skills section of his Bronze DodfE award. The communication from Clare and Philippa was excellent and everything he needed was sent well in advance ready for him to start his first lesson. He was well directed during each session and always knew what he should be doing both during the lesson and for ‘homework’. His typing has improved greatly and he now has a valuable life skill and a completed section towards his DofE award. Highly recommend.

My 14 year old son had a wonderful experience learning to touch type with QWERTY kids. He gained a fantastic WPM score, and gained a valuable skill for his GCSEs and A level years. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the course to any teenager to gain this essential skill to help them with their exam years.

QWERTYkids is great: professional, reliable and with a really accessible approach to learning to touch type - an increasingly important life skill. Clare and Philippa are really responsive to any queries and questions - key to remote learning I think. My 15 year-old son thoroughly enjoyed their Flexi course which he completed for his DofE, and his typing skills have improved enormously.

Two of my daughters (aged 11 and 14) have spent the last six Saturday mornings online with a few of their friends doing a QWERTYkids course and they have LOVED it! The teaching is so enthusiastic and both Clare and Philippa made it so much fun for the girls. It’s such a useful life skill to have at their age too - one of them used to type like a pigeon but now she’s like Woody Woodpecker! Highly recommend the course and thank you so much.

Touch Typing Support for Different SEND Needs

Why Touch Typing Supports Children with SEND

Touch typing is widely recommended as a support strategy for children with SEND, including dyslexia, ADHD, dyspraxia and autism—helping reduce the challenges associated with handwriting.

Touch typing is widely recommended as a support strategy for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including dyslexia, ADHD, dyspraxia and autism. By reducing the physical and cognitive demands of handwriting, typing allows students to focus on their ideas, improve written output, and build confidence in learning environments such as school and exams.

ADHD, ASD, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Downs Syndrome & Tourette’s Syndrome are all examples of SEND conditions. They are diagnostic labels used to explain the diverse ways of thinking, learning, processing, and behaving. Our Touch Typing  courses can help unleash your potential.

Our Touch Typing  courses provide a useful alternative to handwriting, especially if handwriting is a challenge for students with a SEND profile such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia (developmental coordination disorder), Autism & Dysgraphia. For these students, written work can be a very difficult area, but when Touch Typing on a computer, it’s a totally different process in the brain compared to writing with a pen.

It may take them a little longer to complete the programme, but they can still become proficient Touch Typists, meaning they will be less focused on what their fingers are doing, leaving their mind free to focus on what is important, the written content and creativity. In general it takes approximately 15 hours to complete the Touch Typing programme

Our teachers, Philippa and Clare both are qualified teachers who worked in schools for many years and taught children with a wide range of learning differences. They are very experienced and understand the challenges faced and how to help each individual student overcome them, and have specifically set up their Touch Typing Dyslexia & Neurodiverse Courses with this in mind.

Although there are other options available, such as dictation (using a scribe) or voice recognition software, these options can be very time consuming and difficult to master, especially for the neurodiverse child who often struggles with short term memory. For all students, Touch Typing becomes an unconscious physical skill reducing mental load and freeing their conscious mind to concentrate on more important tasks such as planning, composing, processing, proof-reading and editing (often problem areas). It makes life a lot easier and it’s an area where children with dyslexia can excel, and the Touch Typing Dyslexia & Neurodiverse Courses can help.

This depends on the individual student. All of our courses are suitable for everyone. Choose from our Touch Typing Dyslexia & Neurodiverse Courses from the list below.

The Flexi Course is suitable for a more independent learner as it is done at home at a time that suits, with weekly sign ins form Clare or Philippa.

The Flexi Plus Course is a good introduction, with one lesson online and the remaining 11 lessons done at home with weekly sign ins with Clare or Philippa.

After School Online is suitable for everyone. It is 1 hour long via Zoom with Clare & Philippa helping throughout.

Holiday Online Intense is a 5 Day Online Course, running from Monday – Friday 9-11am with a short break in between. This is suitable for any student who is keen to learn to Touch Type over a shorter, more intense period of time.
