How Touch Typing Helps Children with SEND
Supporting children with SEND to overcome writing barriers and build confidence through touch typing.
Touch typing can be transformative for children with SEND, helping remove the barriers that traditional writing often creates. For many learners with dyslexia, ADHD, dyspraxia, autism and other additional needs, handwriting can be slow, frustrating, and mentally exhausting. By learning to type efficiently, children can focus on their ideas instead of the physical process of writing—building confidence, independence, and a more positive experience with learning both in and out of the classroom.
Our Touch Typing Courses are suitable for students with learning differences. Our courses are run by qualified teachers, with many years experience of teaching pupils with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD, Processing, ASD & Down Syndrome.

ADHD, ASD, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Downs Syndrome & Tourette’s Syndrome are all examples of SEND conditions. They are diagnostic labels used to explain the diverse ways of thinking, learning, processing, and behaving. Our Touch Typing courses can help unleash your potential.
Our Touch Typing courses provide a useful alternative to handwriting, especially if handwriting is a challenge for students with a SEND profile such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia (developmental coordination disorder), Autism & Dysgraphia. For these students, written work can be a very difficult area, but when Touch Typing on a computer, it’s a totally different process in the brain compared to writing with a pen.
It may take them a little longer to complete the programme, but they can still become proficient Touch Typists, meaning they will be less focused on what their fingers are doing, leaving their mind free to focus on what is important, the written content and creativity. In general it takes approximately 15 hours to complete the Touch Typing programme
Our teachers, Philippa and Clare both are qualified teachers who worked in schools for many years and taught children with a wide range of learning differences. They are very experienced and understand the challenges faced and how to help each individual student overcome them, and have specifically set up their Touch Typing Dyslexia & Neurodiverse Courses with this in mind.
Although there are other options available, such as dictation (using a scribe) or voice recognition software, these options can be very time consuming and difficult to master, especially for the neurodiverse child who often struggles with short term memory. For all students, Touch Typing becomes an unconscious physical skill reducing mental load and freeing their conscious mind to concentrate on more important tasks such as planning, composing, processing, proof-reading and editing (often problem areas). It makes life a lot easier and it’s an area where children with dyslexia can excel, and the Touch Typing Dyslexia & Neurodiverse Courses can help.
